Why Writers Should Consider Careful Citations in Academic Works
Learning how to do in-text citation and references is essential as it makes the academic text authentic, ethical, and legal. It is also of important value on doing academic essays or researches for school or universities. Knowing how to do in-text citations and referencing is an important rule for students and professionals alike.
An in-text citation is a shortened version of the source’s bibliographic information that is inserted into the text of a paper. It can be a simple mention of the other’s work, or a part of their work which may be paraphrased or included as a direct quote. This is done to tell the readers that the information in that sentence was borrowed from someone else. While the in-text citation gives a small information about the source, the “References” for APA or “Works Cited” for MLA provides the full information or details about the source and are organized alphabetically.
Different academic disciplines have its own preferred citation styles. Two of the most common citation styles are the APA Style and the MLA style. APA stands for American Psychological Association and was created in 1929 to standardize citations style for scientific writing. MLA or Modern Language Association was established in 1886 and is the oldest citation style.
The APA Manual recommends the use of author-date citation structure for in-text citation references. On the APA Format, the author’s last name and the year of publication for the source should appear on the text. On the other hand, the MLA format follows the author-page method of in-text citation. The author’s name may appear either in the sentence itself or in parentheses following the quotation’s paraphrase. The page number(s) should always appear in the parentheses and never in the sentence.
Purposes of doing In-Text Citations, References/Works Cited
There are many reasons as to why in-text citations and references or works cited must be taken into consideration and it all boils down to being a responsible writer or researcher. It is ethical to give credit to the sources of the ideas included in the academic. The writer’s own ideas are presented in the academic work and needs to be supported by other people’s ideas or information. It is important to distinguish clearly what is from the writer’s own thinking and which is from others in order to avoid plagiarism. In addition, it also shows that the work has credibility and authority. Doing the research requires the writer not to just present the writer’s claims. It should be described and explained thoroughly with the help of other people and their works. Whatever the writer’s claim is, it should be backed up with evidences from the research made by the experts on a particular subject matter.
Academic integrity is one of the values that everyone should have in doing scholarly writings. Regardless of whether the writer or researcher is using the APA or MLA Style, there is a need to understand that the sources borrowed or used in the text should be cited inside and at the end of the paper. Knowing how to give credits to the sources and the proper format on citing a source is essential in submitting academic papers and will be of big help for its readers and future researchers.
